Yes, our thoughts/cognitions impact our feelings and therefore our feelings impact our behaviors. And our feelings impact our thoughts AND our behaviors.
Therefore, we operate in such a way that we are DRIVEN by our FEELINGS.
BUT, the other part of CBT is that our thoughts/cognitions impact our behaviors directly AND our feelings as well. And how we behave impacts how we feel AND how we think.
Are U lost yet? Stick with me…here’s an example:
If U don’t feel like exercising, but U wake up and do it anyway, U probably feel better afterwards, more energized….meaning that THAT behavior impacted how U feel.
It is VERY trendy nowadays to say that how U think creates Ur world and how U feel, BUT this is only SORT OF true and is omitting the other part of CBT.
Lost again? I hear ya, but here’s another example to hopefully help U make sense of this:
If U have anxiety and get an email from Ur boss that states “we need to meet ASAP” and U immediately think about having messed up, I am going to lose my job, if I lose my job, I won’t be able to provide for myself and my family, and therefore we will end up on the streets, etc….within about 20 seconds, U are on the street and homeless, meanwhile Ur body is fully activated, Ur pulse rate is going up, and U are probably shutting down more and more…which may cause U to not do any work until the meeting which in turn will make U even more anxious about not working and reaffirming the fear that now Ur boss actually has a reason to fire U for and U overassess about it until the meeting.
U still with me yet?
That is the vicious cycle of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and how it can help U or a loved one get unstuck from Ur patterns.
